Recipe Ingredient Notes
Gluten Free Bagels: I use homemade gluten free bagels to make bagel chips. Either my original gluten free bagels or my gluten free pretzel bagels will work here. I am not a big fan of using bagels with inclusions like raisins since that can make them trickier to slice. Make sure the bagels are at least a day old—this makes slicing easier and helps them dry out faster in the oven. Fresh bagels will work as well but may need to be baked for a few additional minutes.
Olive Oil: Olive Oil adds a nice flavor and helps the bagel chips crisp up well. If you prefer a more neutral taste, you can use oils like avocado oil or grapeseed oil. Both have high smoke points, making them great for baking the chips without burning. You can also try infused oils (like garlic or rosemary) for extra flavor!
Seasonings: I use Everything Bagel Seasoning which is a blend of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and salt. Additionally, I also add some garlic powder. Of course, you can get creative here with other spices you may have in your pantry like smoked paprika, Cajun Seasoning, or Italian Herbs. The options are endless. I skip adding additional kosher salt since the Bagel Seasoning already contains salt. So if you choose to use a different seasoning you may want to sprinkle your chips with some kosher salt before baking.
How to make Gluten Free Bagel Chips
Making homemade gluten free bagel chips is very simple. It's a great way to use up stale bagels and turn them into a delicious snack.
- Preheat the oven to 375F. I bake the bagel chips directly on my baking sheet without using parchment paper. But if you like, line the sheet pan with parchment paper and set aside.
- Using a serrated knife, like a bread knife, slice the bagels into thin pieces, about ⅛ to ¼ inch thick. Try to slice them evenly so they all bake at the same time. I found that slicing the gluten free bagels like a regular loaf of bread makes it easier to achieve a uniform thickness. This also gives you bigger chips which are great for dipping.
- Put the sliced bagels into a mixing bowl. Drizzle olive oil over the bagel slices, then use your hands to toss and coat them evenly with the oil.
- Add your seasoning of choice. Toss the bagel slices with your hands until the seasoning is evenly distributed.
- Spread the seasoned bagel slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. Make sure they’re not overlapping for even baking.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, flip them over and continue to bake them for an additional 10-15 minutes. Bake them until the bagel chips are golden brown and crispy. Check them frequently to prevent burning.
- Once done, remove from the oven and let the bagel chips cool on the baking sheet.
Bagel chips will crisp up as they cool. As they cool down, the moisture evaporates, making them even crunchier. It’s best to let them cool completely on the baking sheet to achieve the perfect crispiness. Just be careful not to burn them during baking, as they can go from golden to overdone quickly!
Storage
Homemade gluten free bagel chips can last about 1-2 weeks when stored properly.
To keep them fresh and crispy, allow the chips to cool completely at room temperature before storing them in an airtight container. If you’re making a large batch, you can place paper towels between layers of chips to absorb any moisture. Store the container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
If the chips lose their crunch over time, simply crisp them in the oven at a low temperature (around 300°F or 150°C) for a few minutes.
Serving Ideas
Dips: Serve with a variety of dips like hummus, guacamole, salsa, or spinach artichoke dip for a delicious snack.
Salad Topping: Crush bagel chips and use them as a crunchy topping for salads, adding texture and flavor.
Charcuterie Platter: Add the chips to a charcuterie platter with assorted meats, cheeses, nuts, and spreads for a complete snacking experience.
Soup Companion: Serve bagel chips alongside soups, such as tomato or chowder, for added crunch.
Sweet Treat: Pair sweet bagel chips with cream cheese frosting, yogurt, or a fruit spread for a delightful dessert option.
Snack Mix: Take your Gluten Free Chex Mix to the next level by adding homemade bagel chips. Just break the bagel chips into smaller pieces and mix them in with your favorite Chex cereal, nuts, pretzels, and other mix-ins.
Recipe Variations for Homemade Bagel Chips
Here are some fun variations to try at home.
- Herb and Garlic Bagel Chips: Mix garlic powder, dried oregano, and dried basil with olive oil. Follow the basic recipe, adding the herb mixture when tossing the bagel slices.
- Cheesy Bagel Chips: Use grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. Toss the bagel slices with olive oil and the cheese mixture before baking.
- Spicy Bagel Chips: Combine chili powder, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder. Mix with olive oil and toss with the bagel slices for a spicy kick.
- Ranch Bagel Chips: Toss the bagel slices in olive oil and then coat with the ranch seasoning for a flavorful twist.
- Sweet Cinnamon Sugar Bagel Chips: Toss the bagel slices in olive oil or some melted butter and then coat with the cinnamon sugar mixture before baking.
Feel free to adjust the seasoning quantities to your taste and experiment with different oils like truffle oil or garlic oil for extra flavor!

Note about Salt in my Recipes
I use Diamond Kosher Crystal Salt in all of my recipes unless otherwise stated. If use use a different brand or kind of salt in your kitchen please adjust accordingly since some salts can be saltier. If you use Morton’s Kosher Salt please be aware that their salt granules are smaller in size, denser, and crunchier and twice as salty.
Baking in grams
I share my recipes in grams and by weight since baking by weight is the most accurate way to bake. Digital Scales are very affordable and easy to use. You can purchase them on Amazon for less than a set of measuring cups. For small amounts under 10 grams, I like to use this Precision Pocket Scale. Measuring cups are very inaccurate which can cause significant errors when it comes to gluten-free baking or baking in general. Especially since I bake with gluten-free flours which weigh differently than “regular” flours. I do provide some ingredients like spices and leavening agents in measuring spoons. To learn more about Baking with a digital scale, make sure to check out my post about Baking by weight.
Note about Ovens and Oven Temperatures
All my recipes are tested and developed with a conventional oven. I always bake my baked goods on the rack placed in the MIDDLE of my oven. This way the heat coming from the bottom will not burn my baked goods.
If you are baking with convection (fan-forced), please adjust the recipes accordingly. Convection oven can cause baked goods to dry out quickly and still be raw inside. Since takes at least 15-20 minutes for a standard American Oven to be fully preheated. I highly recommend investing in an Oven Thermometer.
